Honoring The Life of Henry A. Swann, Jr. - A Journey Through Life with Talent, Selflessness and Family Love

Henry A. Swann, Jr.’s extraordinary life began in Springfield, Massachusetts in March 1951. Born to Marion and Henry Swann, Sr., Henry’s childhood was a tapestry woven with captivating journeys to Spain, Japan, Germany, and Panama, thanks to his father’s career in the U.S. Air Force. These experiences cultivated a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and shaped his formative years.

Henry’s time at Balboa High School in Panama was exceptional.  He excelled academically and athletically, particularly in baseball, where his talent as a skilled pitcher and shortstop caught the eye of the Cincinnati Reds upon graduation.

Following his promising high school baseball career, Henry pursued higher education at American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts, and later Bowie State University in Maryland. His professional journey encompassed various roles, ranging from unconventional positions like a tampon assembler to more conventional roles like a funeral home accountant, before finding his true calling at the U.S. Army Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Fund (MWR). Serving military families for 34 years, Henry’s dedication culminated in his role as Chief of Finance and Administration, where he transferred MWR operations from Washington DC to San Antonio in 2012.

In April 1984, Henry married the love of his life Beverly Brown and they set forth to navigate a blended family, three sons Henry Swann, III, Bryan Swann, and Ryan Swann and two bonus daughters Glynis Brown and Glynda Brown.  They built a beautiful life together transcending  38 years in Maryland and Texas.  Henry and Beverly loved to entertain family and friends for every occasion.  Henry was the eldest sibling in his family and Beverly was always his supporting cast.  As his health deteriorated, Beverly cared for him in the San Antonio home they loved. Their love was epic and anyone could see it and feel it. Beyond his professional endeavors, Henry was an ardent golfer and a devoted family man. In retirement, he fostered enduring connections within the golfing community, finding joy not only on the fairways but also in assembling puzzles—a hobby inherited from his mother. His deep faith led him to actively serve in churches in both Fort Washington, Maryland and San Antonio, Texas.

Henry’s profound love and respect for family and friends left an enduring mark on countless individuals. His passion, spirit, and unwavering commitment to those he cherished defined his remarkable journey. Henry peacefully answered the divine call at his San Antonio home on November 30, 2022, succumbing to Glioblastoma, a rare and incurable form of brain cancer. His legacy lives on through the Henry A. Swann, Jr. Foundation, commemorating his life and supporting research efforts to better understand and ultimately defeat Glioblastoma.

The Henry A. Swann, Jr. Foundation is dedicated to raising awareness of brain cancer, educating the public, and funding research toward finding a cure. It operates exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes.   The Foundation invites all to join in honoring Henry’s dedication to golf and raising awareness for Glioblastoma at the 2nd Annual Henry A. Swann, Jr. Golf Tournament. This event, to be held on Friday, July 25th 2025, aims to raise money for advance research, kindle awareness, and pursue a cure for this formidable disease, continuing Henry’s legacy of making a positive difference in the world.  Glioblastoma Awareness Day is July 16, 2025!
